Ousmane Dembele, Paulinho, Nelson Semedo, Gerard Deulofeu, these are the four players Barcelona signed this summer, leaving few of their fans satisfied, as Neymar’s departure cast a long and heavy shadow on the club.
Barca legend Xavi has spoken before about his belief that the club should change the way they do things, should focus again on producing their own talents, and now that the transfer window is shut down, he spoke his mind again, leaving no doubt that he expected better from Barcelona.
Barca still play really good football but they could have signed better. They’ve fallen asleep because five or six years ago they had the best players in the world for Barca’s system. Now, for that system, they have five or six players: [Andres] Iniesta, [Jordi] Alba, [Lionel] Messi, [Gerard] Pique, Luis Suarez, [Sergio] Busquets
Xavi told Marca, before repeating his unshaken belief that their academy, La Masia, should be given priority.
Barca should have 11 for that system. Before, you wouldn’t see anyone play and say: ‘He’d be good at Barca.’ That’s because they were already there. They have signed players that don’t fit that system. The academy has to be strengthened. If there are doubts, look at what you have in-house. In Barca’s best era, at least 60 percent of the players came from the academy
the former Blaugrana captain said, but hardly anyone seems to be listening to him in Barcelona’s board of directors, who look more and more disconnected from the club’s traditions every week that passes.
