The round of 16 at the European Championships was only introduced in the recent 2016 edition in France when the number of participants in the tournament increased from 16 to 24 teams. The organisation, therefore, decided that after the group phase (and before that the qualifying phase) only 16 national teams would advance to the knockout phase. When will the Euro 2021 Round of 16 be played?
For the organisers, the Euro 2020 Round of 16 is also known as the “last 16”. The knockout phase will start on 26th June 2021 and end on 29th June 2021. Two matches will be played each day and kick-offs are scheduled at 18:00 and 21:00. See the Euro 2021 match schedule.
WHICH VENUES WILL HOST THE ROUND OF 16?
The round of 16 matches will be played consecutively in the following stadiums and cities:
- Wembley Stadium in London (26/06 and 29/06)
- Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam (26/06)
- Olympic Stadium in Seville (27/06)
- New National Stadium in Budapest (27/06)
- Arena Nationala in Bucharest (28/06)
- Telia Parken in Copenhagen (28/06)
- Hampden Park in Glasgow (29/06)
This means that 7 of the 12 Euro 2021 stadiums will host a match during the round of 16. The other four Euro 2020 cities, Monaco, St. Petersburg, Rome and Baku, will host the quarter-final matches of Euro 2021.
WHICH NATIONS WILL GO THROUGH TO THE FINAL ROUND OF EURO 2021?
The national teams that will participate in the Round of 16 of Euro 2021 are all the teams that finish first or second in each of the six Euro 2020-2021 groups. The remaining four places are awarded to the best four third-placed teams in each group. After the preliminary round of the European Championships, only the team ranked last in its group and the two third-placed teams (with fewer points) are eliminated.
