For months now he had been refusing paying too much attention (at least in public) to ‘what if they don’t sign new contracts’. Talking to reporters ahead of Arsenal’s game against Watford though, Arsene Wenger – finally – admitted that it’s real possibility, both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil could leave the club in January.
In our situation, we have envisaged every solution. It is possible
the Gunners manager replied when asked if the club could be forced to sell both their star players in the winter transfer window.
He did look somewhat optimistic though, when talking about Ozil in particular.
It is my understanding that his intention is to stay with us
Wenger said, commenting on reports that the Germany international has expressed his will to sign, after all, a new contract with the Gunners.
Exactly the opposite seems to be the case with Sanchez. The Chile international is reported to have made it crystal clear to Arsenal that he is not going to sign a new contract, regardless of the terms the club propose.
If Wenger feels that there is really no way to convince Sanchez to stay at Emirates, selling him in January will be an one-way road. If not, the Chilean will leave next summer for nothing.
