It was being rumoured for a couple of weeks now, Barcelona officials had said that a deal was about to be reached, Andres Iniesta had said that ‘good news’ were about to be shared with Barcelona fans, and it’s now official; the 33-year-old has signed a new contract that will keep him a Blaugrana for the rest of his career, regardless of how many years he himself chooses to go on playing.
Andres Iniesta signed a lifetime contract with FC Barcelona on Friday, in a deal that will keep him at the club for the rest of his career
the Catalan club announced, confirming relevant reports.
Iniesta has been at Barcelona since the age of 12(!), and during his professional career has won 30 titles with the team, as many as Lionel Messi, the two leaders in that list, having left behind them Xavi Hernandez, who left the club two years ago.
What the news practically mean, is that it is left up to Iniesta himself to decide when he will quit. Barcelona have no doubt that Iniesta will know better than anyone else when it will be time to retire.
One thing he won’t have to worry about is having his contract renewed every summer. The one he just signed, will simply be terminated by himself whenever he feels that it’s time to hang up his boots, and most probably serve the club from another position.
