It looks like the worst has been avoided, but the situation remains critical. Abdelhak Nouri, Ajax’s 20-year-old midfielder, remains in intensive care, after collapsing during their friendly game against Werder Bremen.
We have landed in Amsterdam. Latest update on Nouri: he is on intensive care and kept asleep, but he’s out of danger
Ajax announced through their social media accounts. Hours earlier, the youngster had fallen on the field while the game was on. Ajax’s doctor was next to him in a mater of seconds, and soon a helicopter was on site to airlift him to the closest hospital.
It’s really too early. All we can do is hope and pray that he will recover
Ajax coach Marcel Keizer told NOS. He made sure to give Sunday off to the team, even though the players were informed they would be welcomed at the club headquarters if they needed to talk about what happened.
It’s impossible to describe what’s going on. Appie is part of Ajax. He is real Ajax: he comes from the youth system, everyone knows him. I saw immediately that this was severe. Everybody thought he had swallowed his tongue or something
Keizer also said.
Edwin van der Sar, Ajax’ CEO, tried to look at the bright side of it.
It could have been worse. At a certain point it took so long, you’re thinking of something really worse since his legs weren’t moving at all. His family and friends will come over. We will support them in every way possible
he told NOS, before repeating that “it could have been much worse”.
