Tenth win in ten matches in the World Cup qualifiers, 30 points, 43 goals scored, just four conceded, what else could have Germany done the last 12 months?
Joachim Loew’s team beat Azerbaijan 5-1 in their last game in this qualifying campaign, but the coach of the world champions was quick to point out that the finals will be a totally different case.
One makes a mistake if one sets this qualification as a benchmark. Sure, it was good, it was a clear achievement, but at the World Cup you come up against quite different calibres of sides. There is still a lot to do. I want to achieve something very great in a few months. It will be hard to become world champions twice
Loew said, having given playing time once again to guys who are anything but guaranteed of being in the final cut for the World Cup finals.
Germany’s 5-1 win over Azerbaijan had it’s bad moments as well though. Both Niklas Sule and Shkodran Mustafi got injured and had to be substituted during the first half. Mustafi’s injury seems serious.
It seems that it is some muscle tear or some muscle fibre tear. In any case it could force him to a longer break
Loew told reporters after the game in Kaiserslautern.
