“Most probably not directed at the referee, but still an unsporting gesture”. That’s the bottom line of FIFA’s take on Dele Alli’s… middle-finger, handing the England international a one-game suspension and a fine.
Following the incident that occurred during the match between England and Slovakia on 4 September 2017, the English player Dele Alli has been sanctioned with a suspension for one official match and a fine of CHF 5,000 for making an offensive and unsporting gesture
a FIFA spokesperson told Omnisport, explaining the decision of the Disciplinary Committee.
Although the DC was not convinced that the player directed the gesture at the referee, and regardless of whether it was allegedly directed at a team-mate, it did consider such gesture to be offensive and unsporting and therefore it amounted to a violation of article 57 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code
the same spokesperson also said. Alli was caught by cameras showing his middle finger to someone, during England’s game against Slovakia earlier this month. He claimed the… recipient of his gesture was former Tottenham teammate Kyle Walker, and the whole thing was just a joke, but definitely not one that FIFA laughed with. He will miss England’s game against Slovenia.
