Stadium Spotlight: Estadio Chivas, Mexico

Posted January 5, 2010 in Stadia by

This month, Chivas de Guadalajara’s new stadium, Estadio Chivas, was supposed to open after two years of construction. Construction and financing delays have delayed that. But it looks like the new venue will open later this year.

The one major downside to the stadium from a soccer perspective? Artificial turf.

Let us take a look at the original renderings and the current progress for the 45,000 seater stadium.

  1. More fake stuff. This scourge must end. I feel like we’re fighting a cancer here, and losing. How does the FMF allow this? When you get promising El Tri players ruining their knees on this stuff, they’ll act. But I wonder what the threshold is. How many young Mexican players have to be injured before it’s replaced?

  2. It’s been touted to be the “greenest” stadium in Mexico with all sorts of energy saving features. Except, it has no public transport links (like rail) and instead of being located downtown like their current stadium. It’s in the suburbs, ala Toyota Park or Dallas. So people will be forced to drive there or take buses. *sarcastic clap*

  3. Indeed: for all the talk of the “green” elements of the stadium, they do prominently promote the nearby highways and boast of the 5,000 parking spaces on their website pretty incongruously.

  4. when this stadium is finished i’d like to see Chivas build one of these in East L.A. to prove their commitment to American Soccer, rather than their commitment to a second-rate shoestring Chivas farm team sharing Home Depot Center.

  5. So Atlas will still be playing at Estadio Jalisco?
