Pitch Invasion Getting a Facelift

By Tom Dunmore • Jan 15th, 2008 • Category: About this site13 responses

Pitch Invasion should be getting a new look later tonight. Please bear with us as things might look weird for a bit.

Update: the major part of the transition is over. As you can see, we have more of a magazine look now. Still a lot of work to do making everything look and work right, but I think we’re functional for now, so comment away.

  1. Old version was easier on the eyes, but i guess you need to move forward.

  2. Davyd, what about the new look isn’t so easy on the eyes? I think the font size is a bit small, something I’ll address. Once I’m done tweaking it, it’ll probably look more like the old theme. Thanks for the comment, any more feedback would be great.

  3. Looks great ! I like the new magazine style. More professional than the old ” blog ” look. Big improvement if you ask me.

  4. I’m also a fan of the new look. Would not object to a somewhat larger font, though.

And since we are on aesthetics, a pedantic gripe. You know that the European Championship logo that you’ve been using for the retrospectives didn’t exist before 1988, don’t you? The anachronism bothers the historian in me, though I understand why you are doing it.

  5. Ah, no, I didn’t know that ursus, though now you mention it, it ought to have been obvious. You should have spoken up sooner!

And thanks for the comments on the look, Sven and ursus, still tweaking things so let me know if it starts looking better or worse….

  6. Actually, I mistyped earlier. It was introduced for the 84 championships in France, and then re-used in ‘88 and ‘92 (with the colours modified to match the host nation’s flag). I had thought that Italia ‘80 was the first Euro to have a logo of its own, but this site (http://www.aldaver.com/index.html#eurocup) indicates that there was one for the 1976 tournament in Yugoslavia.

  7. This may well be down to my outdated version of IE at work, but the “centre” column led by the photos and followed by American Soccer, et al is now moved to the right margin (below the Google ads), leaving a great wide void in the middle of the page.

Another thing you might consider is a box of links to contributions by regular contributors (Brian, Vanda, Max, etc.). You could put that on the right below the tags.

  8. I love it — very slick and modern-looking, but not gimmicky and, you know, Modern.

  9. ursus & Davyd,

If you want to increase the font size manually, you can use Ctrl ‘+’

    Ctrl ‘-’ decreases it.

This works in IE and Firefox - if you’re using a different browser, check the docs. If you’re using Firefox, consider installing the NoSquint extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2592) which remembers your font size for every site you visit.

Useful for another site we know of with an annoyingly small font size ;-)

  10. Thanks folks. I’ll continue tweaking things, and ursus, your suggestion is already in the works, as are one or two other things.

  11. I was missing the original logo, looks great now.

  12. I dig the new layout, Tom. Good work.

  13. Nice work.
