Match info, statics and live score
Before the Match: Sweden vs Ukraine
Sweden (1st Group E)
With two wins and a draw, everything went well for the Swedes. This is especially true when the good results have come from playing against teams like Spain and Poland.
As the group stage progressed, the Blågult were able to raise their game. Sweden went from being a dull team to the top of their group and a contender to be one of this year’s outsiders. They could continue to do so despite the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Ukraine (3rd Group C)
Shevchenko’s Ukraine qualified for the last 16 of Euro 2021 by being the best third-placed team. After losing to the Netherlands and Austria, they had only three points against Northern Macedonia. However, the results do not necessarily reflect the performance of the team led by the former Ballon d’Or winner.
However, Yarmolenko’s teammates can be happy that they “only” faced Sweden when they could have also faced the World Champions, France.
Match Analysis: Sweden vs Ukraine
Sweden: The yellow tide
It was a bit of a surprise that Sweden finished in first place in Group E ahead of Spain and Poland. They gave a remarkable performance and it was also due to the poor performances of their opponents. It is, nevertheless, true that the Blue-Yellows came out on top against the Poles and the Slovaks and drew against La Roja.
Although the quality of the performance Janne Andersson’s men gave was questioned (especially after their draw against Spain), they were able to raise it to win their next two games, in which the victory against Poland (3-2) is certainly the most convincing.
Ukraine: The revival
After being eliminated from the group stage at Euro 2016 and not even playing in the 2018 World Cup, Ukraine seems to have recovered. The new generation of players is certainly promising (Zinchenko, Malinovskyi, Bushchan…) and blends perfectly with the more experienced players.
The team’s perfectionist approach to the game is due to the ideas of coach Andryi Shevchenko, who prefers to go forward, even if it means conceding chances. And this is an important point when we know that they will have to face a team that is not afraid to defend, who has offered a lacklustre performance previously.
