‘The Gunners have no players acting like on-field leaders’, that’s a line repeated a lot in media outlets but also websites dedicated to everything Arsenal-related. The lack of leadership (if it really exists) has even been blamed for their failure to win the championship for years now, and, even more, for finishing fifth in last season’s Premier League.
Arsene Wenger was asked about it, and he said what he was expected to say (backing his captains), adding though a little… Wenger touch to his answer, showing people a different way to look at things, just like he loves doing.
We have many leaders, but the modern life has created maybe a bit less natural leadership because more players are better informed and have a bigger knowledge of the game so everybody contributes
the Frenchman told reporters, explaining why maybe the role of the captain nowadays is not the one it used to be up until some years ago.
It is less centralised on one or two persons. But of course at the moment, I would say Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are the captains with Petr Cech so the natural responsibility goes to them
Wenger also said, backing his captains, who are either way vastly experienced players.
