It has been rumoured for weeks now that Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde could be the successor of Luis Enrique at Camp Nou, but the last 24 hours the rumours seem to have turned into something ‘almost official’, at least according to numerous reports in Catalan media.
Valverde is said to have reached an agreement, without having signed anything yet, something that should happen right after the end of the season.
The former Barcelona striker (it’s one of the five teams he played for, during his 14-year career as a player), seems to be the Josep Maria Bartomeu’s final choice. According to reports, the Barcelona president made up his mind for good after the recent argument between Neymar and Juan Carlos Unzue, Enrique’s assistant, who was also a candidate to take over next season.
The two men had an exchange of words about ten days ago, during a training session, and the Brazilian, according to sources close to him, was very dissatisfied with Unzue, going that far as to say that he would push for a move this summer, if Unzue was named Barcelona’s head coach.
Luis Enrique announced his decision to leave the Blaugrana earlier this season, saying that after three seasons at the club he feels tired and in need of a break.
