Recovering from a knee injury can be a lengthy and complicated procedure, Chris Smalling knows that very well, and this season he had to deal not only with that, but also with Jose Mourinho telling the Press that he and Phil Jones (also injured), should
be brave, take a risk, because for the team you have to do everything. You can’t do miracles but you have to try to do everything to accelerate the process.
The England international could have felt unfairly criticized, but instead, he found something positive in Mourinho’s comment.
You can take positives from it, in that the manager wants you out on that pitch. He wants you to represent him and be that fighter and warrior for him
Smalling told Sky Sports.
All throughout my injury we spoke about the process and when I would be back so it is good that the manager wants you because ultimately he has got that decision of whether you play or not
the Manchester United defender also said, before adding the… self-evident:
Obviously with a knee injury there are certain protocols that need to happen
were Smalling’s words, as if saying that no matter how badly he wanted to return earlier, he still had to act rational and not do something that could hurt him and the club in the long run.
