Lionel Messi was great, Argentina created a dozen chances to score, La Bombonera was full and… boiling hot, but the goal just didn’t come for the Albiceleste. The 0-0 to Peru means that Argentina are now sixth in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, with one game left, in Quito, Ecuador, in a few days.
I am still confident that we will be at the World Cup. Today was a very good game. We just missed a goal. I am very hopeful and excited about what is coming. The team never gave up, put in a huge effort and deserved another result
Jorge Sampaoli said in the Press conference after the match, and someone could say he was right. Argentina did create several chances, and they were not only products of one man’s, Messi’s creativity, they were the result of good team effort. Still, they missed that goal they needed.
Messi played a great game, created chances and gave good passes
the Argentina coach said about his team’s biggest star and captain. What do the Albiceleste need to qualify? If they beat Ecuador, they will be at least 5th (having to face New Zealand in playoffs), if not higher (earning a direct ticket to the World Cup finals). If they draw, to finish 5th, they need Peru to lose at home to Colombia, and Paraguay not to beat Venezuela in Asuncion.
Ironically, Argentina could qualify even losing to Ecuador, as long as Peru lose by more goals than them to Colombia, and Paraguay don’t beat Venezuela.
