He was left out of the team that are facing Brazil and Singapore in friendly games these days, and this left many with the impression that his days at the national team may be over, given that new coach Jorge Sampaoli just signed a five-year contract.
Sampaoli himself though, was quick to assure everyone that Sergio Aguero may well return to the national team, and the door is anything but closed on him.
We know Aguero very well and we value what he has done at Manchester City and he will be evaluated and taken into account in the future. Competition in his position is very tough because there are three or four outstanding players
Sampaoli told reporters before the friendly game versus Brazil.
We will talk to him and see how he feels. He can be a great contributor for us
the new Argentina coach added.
Aguero scored 20 goals in 31 appearances in the Premier League this season, but even so, he lost his spot in the starting lineup to Gabriel Jesus.
Furthermore, he has attracted too much criticism by fans in his homeland. It’s characteristic that a couple of months ago a sports newspaper in Argentina organized a poll, and more than 80% of those who took part, answered that Aguero shouldn’t be called to the national team again.
