One of the first things Barcelona did once Neymar’s departure started looking very probable, was to make it clear that they wouldn’t be paying his father and agent the €26million he was supposed to receive on August 1.
The money was agreed as a ‘loyalty bonus’ after Neymar Jr signed a new contract at Barcelona last October, but the Catalan club hadn’t made the payment yet, keeping it until July 31.
If they weren’t going to pay us, I couldn’t do anything. I could not submit to blackmail. At that moment, Barcelona lost my support
Neymar Sr told COPE, talking about the unpaid bonus.
Until then, they had it. I was on the side of Barcelona trying to convince Neymar to stay. But with the attitude of the board I could not put myself on their side because the contract is very explicit and clear, and at no time was it proposed to honour that clause
the PSG star’s father said, revealing that at first he had been trying to convince his son to stay at Barcelona, but changed his attitude once he realized that the Catalan club were not willing to pay him that money.
It is a contract signing bonus. The player’s clause increased, so if Neymar had to leave, it would be a reason for the increase in the penalty clause, but that is a topic to discuss in the future, not for now
Neymar Sr also said, clearly believing that he was entitled to that bonus, despite the fact that his son ended up leaving Barcelona in less than a year after his new contract was signed.
