La Furia Roja is getting ready to face Albania and seal a spot in next year’s World Cup finals, but the first training session didn’t go without unwanted incidents.
Gerard Pique was whistled, booed and cursed at by a number of simple fans who attended the training, some of them holding signs with offensive language.
It would have been a mistake to train behind closed doors
Spain coach Julen Lopetegui told reporters after the incident. Pique was the target for his publicly expressed opinion that Catalans should be recognized the right to vote in a proper referendum on whether or not they want their region to remain part of Spain, or become a country in its own right.
I wanted to know how he was and I’ve seen him willing and motivated. He is well and motivated. If it were not so, he wouldn’t be with me
the Spain coach said about the Barcelona defender, who offered his ‘resignation’ from Spain’s national team on Sunday, amid tears, after a day of unbelievable police brutality in Barcelona and the rest of Catalonia.
I would encourage people to know that we need their support because we are not qualified for the World Cup
Lopetegui also said, urging fans to focus on football.
