The Copa Libertadores titleholders are about to face Real Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup final, and Arthur, their 21-year-old central midfielder, is expected to be one of the main figures of the match.
Gremio’s president Romildo Bolzan talked to Spanish newspaper Marca ahead of the final, and when asked about the photo of his player wearing a Barcelona jersey, didn’t hesitate to admit that… it didn’t go down well.
I was surprised by the photograph in the Barcelona shirt. The club knew there was a lunch with a Barcelona director, but we didn’t know who it was. It was a strange situation – a careless one that Arthur was put in inadvertently. It annoyed us a lot, but it’s in the past now
the Gremio president said, referring to a photo that was taken during a meeting the young Brazilian player had with Barcelona representatives who flew to South America recently, to meet him, and convince him to move to the Blaugrana.
No. For now, we’re going to see how the situation evolves. Everything that passed was in private and we’re going to leave it there for now
Bolzan replied, when asked if Gremio are planning on taking the issue to FIFA. As for Arhtur’r future;
There’s no offer from Barca. None. They’ve not been in touch with us and if they do we will tell them the only way Arthur leaves is if they pay the buyout clause: €50m. At the moment, we’re pointing to his release clause and I don’t think our posture will change. We’re talking about a 21-year-old player who has been in the Brazil squad and we believe he will be at the World Cup, too. He’s been the revelation of the season in the Brazilian league and has a fantastic future
the Gremio president said, ‘warning’ Barcelona and other clubs not to go knocking on their door if they’re not willing to pay the full release clause.
