Taking one of your best players out in the 32nd minute, way before halftime, is highly unusual, but it happened in RB Leipzig’s game at Vodafone Park, against Besiktas.
Timo Werner was caught by cameras trying to cover his ears with his fingers, even picking up a couple of earplugs from his team’s bench, but soon after the half-hour mark, he got substituted, leaving many surprised.
Timo Werner was disturbed by the noise. Sometimes I have the same problem with my ears due to the noise and the atmosphere. I experienced it first in the opening match of Vodafone Park
Besiktas’ coach Senol Gunes told reporters after the match, confident that he knew why Werner was substituted.
Our fans were amazing. The RB Leipzig players were affected by the atmosphere. Their striker wanted to leave the game due to the noise
Oguzhan Ozyakup, one of Besiktas’ midfielders told Turkish newspapers from his side.
As for RB Leipzig’s take on the matter, their coach, Ralph Hasenhuttl, avoided giving details, saying
Werner had some trouble during the game and wanted to rest. He said he couldn’t breathe but now he’s fine.
RB Leipzig lost the game 2-0, and there is no doubt the atmosphere in the stadium played a role in that.
