Germany 2-1 Czech Republic Euro 1996
The last time the European Championships final was played at Wembley and it was Germany who were crowned champions on English soil. England went close but came up short in the latter stages.
Germany fell behind to a Berger penalty just before the hour but fought back into the contest, Bierhoff scoring the first of his two goals just 14 minutes later. 1-1 was the score at the final whistle, so we were thrust into extra-time. Penalties were looking likely, but we were denied the drama of spot kicks when Bierhoff rattled home his second on 95 minutes. That was that and Germany were champions of Europe in London. They had lost the previous final in 1992.
Czechoslovakia 2-2 West Germany 1976
This was one of the tightest and most competitive Euro finals we’re ever likely to see. It took place in Belgrade at the Red Star Stadium in the deciding match of Euro 1976. The teams couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes of football. Svehlik and Dobias were on target inside 25 minutes to give Czechoslovakia a two goals lead.
And it appeared they were on easy street. Cue the fightback from West Germany. Muller halved the deficit on 28 minutes and Holzenbein scored a dramatic equaliser in the last minute of play. The final was eventually decided on penalties with Czechoslovakia scoring all five of theirs. West Germany netted their first three but Honeb missed a fourth and that was enough to see the dream die.
