Harry Kane scored an added time equalizer to earn England a point in Glasgow, but according to Terry Butcher the visitors wouldn’t have needed that if Joe Hart had done a better job against Leigh Griffiths.
The Celtic striker gave Scotland a 2-1 advantage with two direct free-kicks in a matter of minutes, with the game at Hampden Park almost over.
I was very disappointed with the goals. Joe is a big guy, neither shot was particularly close to the post, and it’s disappointing that he did not even get a glove on it
the former England captain told the BBC.
There is a case, and a very strong case, to give Jack Butland a chance now, because he was in pole position before he got injured
Butcher added, convinced that the 24-year-old Stoke City goalkeeper is ready to take over from Hart.
Butland missed most of the 2016-17 season due to an injury, but he did return on April 22, and played in the last five games of the Premier League, keeping two clean sheets.
Butcher is not the only one to voice his belief that it’s time the Stoke City keeper replaces Hart as England’s number one, but it remains to be seen how coach Gareth Southgate will handle the situation once the team get back together for their next game in the qualifiers, in late August.
