If it weren’t for their stubbornness, one of Spain’s most promising rising stars would be theirs now. Barcelona had practically agreed with Mallorca two years ago for the transfer of Marco Asensio, a 19-year-old back then.
Mallorca had agreed to sell for €4.5m, but needed the money up front. Barcelona preferred to pay €2.5m upon signing his contract, and another €2m at a later stage.
Barca said: ‘No, we’re not able.’ They lost the opportunity. When they changed their mind after three months, it was too late
Horacio Gaggioli, Asensio’s agent revealed, talking to Bleacher Report. By the time Barcelona changed their mind, Real Madrid had made their move.
The offer from Real Madrid for Asensio was 20 times better than Barcelona’s in every aspect, football-wise and financially
Gaggioli said, even though, truth is, the Madrid club paid Mallorca €3.5m, not 20 times what Barcelona had offered.
As for Asensio’s childhood team, it has been suggested by a Catalan sports newspaper that he used to be a big Barcelona fan, but his agent dismissed that, saying
his idol as a child was always Zinedine Zidane. He used to have a huge picture of him on his wall
as if saying that Asensio was in fact a Real Madrid fan, years before signing for them.
