When last season was over, it was a common secret at Atletico Madrid that Fernando Torres would not stay, that he had played his last game for the club.
A few days later, things changed when their appeal was turned down, when they realized that the transfer ban imposed on them earlier, would stand.
Even so, even knowing that they could not sign new players this summer, it took Atletico a month to reach an agreement with Fernando Torres over extending his deal for an extra year.

The team get together for the new season, and we are honored to count on Torres. He has extended his contract
an Atletico Madrid tweet read. The deal was reached a day before Atletico start their pre-season, and it’s just for one year, as if screaming out loud that the club did what they did simply because they had no alternatives.
As for Torres himself, he was reported to have an offer from a Mexican club, but not much more than that.
I am very happy to continue one more year together
the former Spain international told the club’s official website, in an as short statement as possible.
