It all came to light when a cousin of his, Selman Yalcin, told Spanish newspaper AS that Atletico Madrid had approached his famous relative, showing interest in him.
Turns out, Yalcin was right, the president of the ‘Rojiblancos’ himself admitted it, quick though to clear out that a deal will not happen, most probably.
Maybe we spoke with his family, but not with him. We are taking another line. We can talk about it in January, when we can sign people, but I don’t think it will happen
Enrique Cerezo told reporters, confirming there was some sort of contact with Zlatan Ibrahimovic‘s side.
The Atletico Madrid president was asked about Diego Costa as well, avoiding giving details on his case, and just sticking to how much FIFA’s ban (Atletico cannot sign players until January) is affecting the club.
The problem is that we cannot sign. If not for that, we would be delighted to try and improve the team a bit
Cerezo said, as if accepting defeat, having his hands tied by the ban.
At least the Alexandre Lacazette deal with Lyon seems to be still in place, since Jean-Michel Aulas, the president of the French club, told reporters that the player could still move to Atletico in January, spending the first half of the season at Lyon.
