It took them long to make their first signing of the summer transfer period, but they already broke their spending record agreeing a €40 million deal with Ajax for Davinson Sanchez.
The young Colombian center-back who joined the Dutch side a year ago coming from Copa Libertadores winners Atletico Nacional, said his goodbyes to his former teammates before flying to London.
I would like to thank the coach, management, players and fans of Ajax. It is a great move for me to come here to develop my career
Sanchez said in a statement published by the Dutch club, once his transfer was completed.
I am very excited to be signing for such a famous club as Tottenham Hotspur. I am looking forward to working with Mauricio Pochettino and the players and meeting everyone there
he also mentioned in his statement.
Martin Jol, a former coach of both Ajax and Tottenham, was full of praise for the young Colombian defender, even though he did ‘warn’ him that things at Tottenham will not necessarily be… dreamy.
If you play for Ajax, you can play for any club in the world – that is reality. He was arguably their best player. He is unbelievably quick. For a young player, he was mentally strong at Ajax. But to be mentally good for the Premier League, you have to learn your trade
the Dutch coach told reporters.
