The tifo below struck me as pretty damn cool when I first saw it, but its meaning escaped me. The banner is by supporters of FC Groningen of the Netherlands, and I asked the photographer, Antoon Kuper, what it was all about:
“Ajax from Amsterdam is a town in the area called Randstad. Groningen is a town in the north of the Netherlands. The people in the Randstad are a bit arrogant and see everybody outside the Randstad as farmers. And we use our “weakness” to our strength, therefore we are proud to be (called) farmers!”
The words come from John Denver’s classic country tune, and the farmer has a ‘G’ for Groningen on his chest. The webpage of the Groningen supporter’s group that created the banner explains more here, though not in English. It’s certainly a fabulous banner, and one has to respect the subversion of urban insults by Groningen fans.
