Our new Thursday series looks at classic football programmes, that perfect accompaniment for a trip down memory lane. This week: we go back 56 years, to the first ever floodlight match at Tottenham Hotspur’s White Hart lane, with the programme’s cover promising Spurs were in for “very attractive visitors” and “very sporting opponents” with the visit of Racing Club de Paris.

I’m pretty partial to Tottenham Hotspur, but I have to say — thinking of my own health — I’m glad I’m not a regular at White Hart Lane. There’s a big difference between following a team on television several thousand miles and marching to the ground week after week, and apparently, if you want to raise your blood pressure, the Lane is the place to go. A survey by Lloydspharmacy found more “heart stopping” (one hopes not literally) moments for Tottenham fans than anyone else in the last year.

The fans back up the findings.

“Watching Spurs can be painful as well as stressful,” said Toby Mitchenall, a White Hart Lane regular. “We can be on top in a game with a two-goal cushion, but still worrying that we’ll throw it all away. It’s often exciting, but never relaxing.” Louise Guggenheim added: “Spurs are a really heart-stopping team to support because they put us through total agony every single game and there hasn’t been a truly happy ending for some time now.”

“Going to White Hart Lane is always a stressful affair,” said Alex Bell. “I remember watching the FA Cup replay with Chelsea last season and feeling sick by the end because I had been so tense throughout.

“We never seem to have just an average game which makes them great to watch but is no good for my heart.”
