Front Page: Germany Shoots For The Golden Pineapple

Posted by on Saturday, July 10th, 2010 at 6:45 am in Diary, World Cup 2010 | 3

As we discussed yesterday, in America, Vince Lombardi called it the “Shit Bowl”; in Germany, it appears a “Losers Game” (as Germany will play in for Third Place at the World Cup today against Uruguay) is rather more charmingly known as going for the prize of the Goldene Ananas, or playing for the Golden Pineapple. Holt sie euch! (get it!) says the Potsdamer Neueste Nachrichten.

Wouldn’t it, in fact, be awesome to see Sepp Blatter actually hand over a golden pineapple at the end of today’s game?

  1. Actually its just – “get it”. Sie can both mean them and it (and her) and since pineapple is a femine word, when you refer to it as it you use sie, rather than es or er fx.

And that was the German grammar lesson of the day.

  2. Ah, thanks Henrik — that actually makes more sense in the context it’s being used, I’ll change the translation above. Cheers.
