FIFA had the chance to intervene already. They didn't.

As anal as soccer is, USSF's not going to allow somebody to be registered to two different clubs at once. And no MLS owner is going to permit a striking player to go play somewhere else for pay without getting an injunction pretty easily. That seems to be straight breach of contract.

Hard to believe many will turn out to watch scabs. Especially when you consider the passion that unions carry in several MLS cities (particularly one that already suffers from poor attendance).

You also have to remember, FIFPro welds a pretty heavy hammer, don't think for a second they wouldn't drop it on the MLS owners if they saw them as a threat to unionized players.

While I side with the players on this I'm not anti-scab. There's guys out there looking to get a paycheck just like the MLS players. If some kid can get the opportunity to live his dream and kick a ball about as opposed to working at McDonalds or Wal-Mart or on a production floor somewhere while the players and owners hammer out a deal, I will not fault him.

They’d still be registered to MLS. And USSF won’t let you be registered to more than one club at a time,

Assuming FIFA backs the owners, which isn't necessarily the case.

This has the potential to really f up a lot more than MLS, if FIFA decides to back stronger player rights. The USSF is pretty well entangled with MLS, with Sunil functioning both as fed president and Kraft Soccer president. Certainly this could sabotage the 2018/2022 bid.

Frankly I'm sick of the gilded age-style high-handedness of MLS owners, and I have no problems with a player strike, even if there are drastic consequences.

I don't believe they can just go play anywhere else. MLS would still hold their cards. They'd still be registered to MLS. And USSF won't let you be registered to more than one club at a time,

They could, however, fall back on the lucrative careers their college educations set them up for. Or enter the real-world workplace.

But Elliott, aren't the players still under contract with MLS even if they stop work working? Even if they go on strike, they can't just quit and go and play anywhere they want right away, can they? The league isn't locking them out as in the NHL case.

The NFL players couldn't hop the Atlantic for a significant Scandinavian payday.

The situation reminds me of the last NHL lockout, when players went to Russia for reasonable paychecks but a bit of culture shock. The difference is the NHL had the firm roots to survive lean years with no significant TV deal, unlike....
