Becks knew what he was doing, and he knew how much a picture of him in the scarf would mean. What he's done by deflecting it in his post match comments is avoided a personal firestorm while giving the people who adore him an arsenal (no pun intended) worth of ammunition in the form of a single snapshot.

If the man knows one thing, it's the power of an image.

Tom, you are right. They have done a great job of raising awareness about the state of the club's finances. And despite Beckham's later comments, the image alone is a powerful one. I just don't see that they have a long term goal beyond the green and gold. The Glazers are in it for the long term and I can't see them letting go easily. And if Manchester United keep doing well and winning trophies, they can justify their presence. We shall see...

Tim, I think it has to be seen as part of a longer-term strategy. It's a much better idea to call for a boycott once you have 100,000+ members to explain the reasoning too and a photo of Becks wearing your scarf than (say) a month ago, when they had far less public presence.

I firmly believe that, visually impressive though it is, this green and gold thing will not make the slightest bit of difference. The supporters taking part have to hurt the Glazers where it matters most to them - their pockets. Only a significant drop in attendances and season ticket sales will give them something to be concerned about. If you really love your club and want to change things over the long term, is staying at home and watching on TV for a couple of games really such a big sacrifice? It make me laugh that they decided to make this protest only if they were winning comfortably with ten minutes left. So, if United were losing they wouldn't make a protest. It seems rather feeble to me.

Waving a few scarves around just makes me think how well Norwich City have done this season after their opening day drubbing by Colchester. If you want to kill a parasite, sometimes you have to some damage the host.
