I think football (soccer) gives everyone something to believe in and cheer for. The lower class just happens to need something like that more. And besides all that, it's fun!

When I first came up with the idea to start the blog, Football is Coming Home, the first person I contacted was Peter Alegi, probablt the foremost academic historian on South African football/soccer and fast building a reputation as a major ananlyst of comtemporary football. This, as we see, while remaining a fan--I mean, he proudly wears his Azzuri blue. Nice work Peter and thanks Andrew.

Great piece. I spent time with Peter back in 1998 in South Africa when he was working on his first Fulbright. He's the one who led me to fall in love with South African sport (and write my college thesis on it). As usual, quality analysis. Thanks for the article, Andrew. I look forward to picking up the book.

[...] African Soccerscapes: History, Ideas, and the 2010 World Cup “Making an academic career out of studying soccer might sound (kind of like) fun, but it turns out to be hard work—mostly because you tend to get dissed from all sides.
