In the event that the 'Red Knights' business does gain serious momentum that leads to their takeover, he can claim to have backed their bid. If nothing comes of it and the Glazers retain control, this 'motley collection of silent sources' can't actually be traced back to him and everything continues as normal. Wouldn't read anything into it. Now, a public statement would be news but Ferguson wouldn't speak out against his employers. He may have come from a socialist background, but he's very much a pragmatist. Ferguson is just being a clever politician.
