Classic Programme #18: St Louis Frogs vs. Cincinnati Comets

Posted March 4, 2010 in Programmes by

The latest cover in our classic programme cover series features a 1972 American Soccer League matchup (at this time the ASL was a regional competitor to the NASL, and a league that lasted from 1933 to 1983). I give you the wonderfully named St Louis Frogs and the Cincinnati Comets. The Comets would win the ASL this same year.

  1. My in-laws used to hang out a few times with the Comets players back in the day. I think they have this programme!

  2. Check this out, http://homepages.sover.net/~spectrum/year/1972.html#ASL

St. Louis changed their name to the Mules during the season, and for some reason the convention that year was in Anchorage, Alaska!

  3. Interesting….lots of name changes it seems, and not a very good year for Chicago teams in the ASL: “Chicago Inter, later called Chicago Hercules and then Chicago Americans, barely managed to play a few games before dropping out of the league.”

  4. I’d like to find the stadiums where some of these teams played. I’m certain there were more than a few ground hopping clubs then.
