  1. That’s a beautiful one; it looks to have terraces along the sidelines as well. I wonder if it was in such good condition when Nick Hornby went there…

  2. Wow, top photo. Gotta love CUFC and this is their turf! Almost feel like I’m there when viewing this pic. Well done!

  3. Know the Abbey Stadium well, it’s amazing to think this stadium (and of course Cambridge United) over the last 20 years has been from the verge of the Premier League to the Conference.

The new stand is actually the away stand, plans to develop the home terrace (out of picture) fell away in the 90′s as the club started its slide down the leagues.

Currently Cambridge’s local derby is a really local game against Histon. As Cambridge were flirting with the Premier League Histon were plying their trade in the Ridgeon’s League, a regional league covering East Anglia and where my beloved Ipswich Wanderers play. As quickly as Cambridge United slid down the leagues Histon rose up through the non-league pyramid and at this moment in time little Histon, a village suburb four miles out of Cambridge city centre, has the upper hand! As their banner said when they beat Leeds in the cup last season, not bad for a village team!

Final nugget on the Abbey, it is also home to a team called CRC (Cambridge Regional College) who again play in the Ridgeons League and although operating as a completely separate team are essentially a sort of combined reserve / academy side for Cambridge United.

  4. Good memories of this stadium. I used to sit about 30 feet from where this was taken, back in the Dion Dublin days … MOOOOOOSE!

Amazing, when you walk into this ground, you almost have to step over people’s back yards! The home terrace is so low, they’d lose a ball or two over the top of it and into the allotments behind.

Great ground, wonderful team. I just hope they make it make into the league soon.
