I wonder to what extent this idea of putting women 'firmly back in their place' has to do with WAG culture alone. For example, one of the most popular daytime TV shows in England is the aptly titled Loose Women, in which a bunch of 30-40 year old women bang on and on and on about their other half in an innuendo filled, giggling mess of a show - hugely popular with women. Then there are mainstream mags such as Heat which play a part in solidifying this role. It seems WAGs and WAG culture (if you can call it that) is a by-product, not a cause of whatever problems the Guardian writer is trying to identify.

Thanks for the link to the WAGs article - it was really good and kind of depressing. The UK/US cultural difference here is interesting to me also; until the Sports Illustrated shoot, I'm pretty sure I couldn't have told you Bethany Dempsey's first name, and I'm the same with the partners of most other national team players. Even in more popular sports like football and basketball, Americans don't seem fascinated in the same way.
