Thanks for the great article, makes me miss Chicago and the Fire as I spend time in the service. I think each of us has an interesting and different story on how it is we came to be part of the family that is the Chicago Fire.

Thank You Tom for this article.
As someone who is relatively new to the Fire and the city of Chicago I had always wondered how it was that people came to be a true part of the section 8 community. For the last three years I have attended the odd game (beginning with the 2007 season opener (what a game!!)) and in a city in which I have always felt like an outsider the Fire has always been something which grounds me and makes me damm proud to be part of the city. I hope to follow the example of those before me and really become part of the the section. I want to become involved in any way I can. 2010 will be my first year as a season ticket holder, but I hope its not the last!

Put simply, thank you for setting and example of how the Fire, and soccer in general, can bring anyone in to become part of a community which can span any distance or obstacle.

Ben, I hate you for trapping me in this vortex. You also set an impossible standard to follow. Thanks a lot, arsehole. ;)

A. Ruiz -- I agree, it's a very interesting topic. There's a Fever Pitch to be written by someone, I think, with some very interesting twists to it because of the culture of the sport here (unlike all the awful Fever Pitch follow-ups in England).

Awesome article. It's great to hear how people became fans of the fire. It's amazing how it sneaks up on you, it happens gradually, then suddenly.

Theres a studs terkel-like book to be made of section 8 and the chicago fire, or even MLS/USA groups in general. You know for the next generations to pore over, when we all kick the bucket in 50-70 years and they start to re-write history on us.

I never noticed the 97 connection. If I had I would have tried to use it to convince you to run for Chairman. Luckily I didn't have to!

Good luck!
