Morecambe FC: Quite Clearly, The Shrimps
Well, now this is a striking logo. Lancashire team Morecambe FC unveiled their new logo this week, and it’s caused quite a stir in that corner of the north-west of the England.
Their nickname is the Shrimps…and boy, did the logo designers run with that theme:
New:
This replaces their previous crest, which had been around since the 1960s; with a boat to represent the seaside town, and the red roses representing the county of Lancashire (the red has obviously inspired the background to the new logo).
Logo travesty or successful modernisation?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. That, sir, is a prawn.
Hmm…yes, I see now (thanks to you):
Well, of all the ways I can imagine to ensure that Roy Keane never becomes your manager, this definitely beats hiring Alfie Håland as your director of media relations. Well played, Morecambe FC. Well played.
Logo travesty, 100%. It looks like a logo on a bag of something from the freezer section of the grocery store. Prawns, apparently.
Just to clarify a couple of points. The old crest is the town of Morecambe crest and ‘belongs’ to the town not the club, hence the decision to develop our own. Secondly, we’ve not actually used it for long ourselves, only since the early 1990’s from memory. in fact, during the 1980’s we used a very similar shrimp.
No it’s a shrimp. It’s stylised, obviously, and some of the body segments (and legs) have been taken out to make it look less, well, scary and that will always lead to some anatomical anomalies if you want to be pedantic. But the original template was from a shrimp – I think the clue is the slightly distended segment on the torso which doesn’t appear in your ‘prawn’. As for its use at all – well, that’s who we are and who we’ve been for many decades, nickname wise!
I think its a big improvement. Who could tell what the previous one means? They could be the sailing gardeners
As a Morecambe FC fan, I like the new badge, it says who we are and where we come from.
Another point to note, highlighted by “mercurial vapors” is that no longer will we be confused
with the elite special forces floral naval delivery service, The S.F.S. (Special Flower Service)
who have a very similar badge to our old design.
I actually quite like it myself. It’s a little absurd, but there’s nothing wrong with that, and it’s far from uncommon for English teams to simplify their often over-complex original crests…my own team Brighton did the same thing, with the move to the Seagulls logo (which only became our nickname in the 1970s).
From a neutral American:
I love it.
Simple, straightforward and to the point. Essential qualities in a good logo.
Plus it shows a sense of humor–a quantity sorely lack in the general populace these days.
