The coldest weather usually falls in January so even the countries with a winter break have been caught out and will have to squeeze the fixtures in after the break, adding further congestion to the fixture list. It may well be that the weather improves when players are off on a sunny retreat elsewhere.

In English football, the busy schedule over Christmas and New Year is a highlight of the year with bumper crowds turning out. It makes little financial sense to miss out on that, surely?</description>
