DemonJuice — Yes, that’s the key sticking point. CONCACAF is able to allow the situation in MLS with Toronto, as are UEFA with Cardiff and Swansea in England, without anyone else interfering, aside potentially from FIFA. Here we have one very powerful confederation (AFC) and one much weaker one (Oceania) essentially in conflict. Only FIFA could resolve this if the AFC and FFA can’t reach agreement.

Can’t they work out something similar to how MLS handles Toronto FC? Namely, allowing Canadians to be domestic players and allowing more international spots that can only be filled by Americans. Or is the fact that they are in 2 different confederations the big sticking point?

Interesting piece and something I wouldn’t have known about. However if this situation applied with Cardiff & Swansea playing in the English Football League then im sure the media would have made sure I would have known about it.
