hey, thanks yerself. i'm as big a soccer fan as you'll find but i'm getting more and more fed up with the outdated way the game is governed and officiated. i like goals. i HATE 0-0 draws. i HATE it when goals are incorrectly ruled offsides by dumbass linesmen. i HATE it when penalty- worthy fouls in the box are ignored by referees who can't tell the difference between a foul and a dive. i think modernizing officiating with video replay would solve a lot of these problems and discourage diving and simulation. is there a forum anywhere where fans can propose improvements to the laws of the game? there might be one in Big Soccer but i haven't seen it. does anybody know? i like count-down clocks better than count-up clocks too, but that's a different subject...

Thanks Evan. Video correction isn't really a rule change, but it certainly would change the game. i suspect in some ways it would improve the game and in others not. The negative would be the change to the flow of the game and the potential to make referees more timid on making a call.

I would like to see a league experiment with the use of video limited to challenges on game changing calls such as red cards, PKs and the ball being over the line on goals.

Providing zero standings points for a scoreless draw also is not technically a rule change. At least, it's not a change to one of the laws of the game. However, you are absolutely right that it would open up the game in the second half of scoreless games. i believe the NASL played with the use of standings points as an incentive to attacking soccer....i believe it was 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss and 1 for each goal in a victory up to 3. Does anyone else know for sure? Have other leagues played with standings points? What was the impact on the game?

okay you asked how about this: the reason soccer referees seem incompetent is not because they are incompetent, it's because the rules of the game put them in the position to fail. we get the benefit of the TV replay and see what happened in slo-mo close up, but the refs don't. so the solution is simple: give the fourth official a TV set and a walky-talky and when there's a call where the ref is out of position to see he can stop play and talk to the fourth official before making the call a penalty or a dive or whatever. i don't think it would slow down the game too much, plus it would discourage diving and add to the drama for the TV audience. i think the UEFA experiment with refs behind the goals is a good idea too but the jury is still out on that one. it's time for soccer to get with the program, football and basketball have been doing this stuff for years. how about hockey? i dunno, i don't watch hockey.
plus: i propose in the event of a 0-0 tie both teams get zero points. if the point of the game is to score goals then shouldn't a team have to at least score a goal to get a point from a tie? this would surely increase attacking play at the end of a tie game. what do you think, futbol fanatics?

i agree that it wasn't a great game, but i'm real curious....how would changing the rules improve the officiating? Make it legal for a goalkeeper to trip an oncoming attacker in the box?

this was one of the worst MLS games i've seen in a while, complete with no goals, crappy Foxboro turf and gridlines, botched PK call and two teams missing half their best players due to injury and lack of quality backups because of the goddam salary cap. not a good advertisement for MLS. and then to top it i watched another 0-0 game in Houston the next day. how many shitty bad calls are we going to put up with before we do something to improve refereeing? and i don't mean a twitter petition, i think the rules need to be changed...
