A 96 year old open national tournament should be stopped because a closed for-profit league doesn't like the financial incentives? The FA Cup prize is only £1,800,000 or about 3x what Kevin Payne is proposing. Does MLS pays an average player 1/3 of what EPL players make, or Championship players for that matter? His statement lacks perspective. MLS does not equal soccer in the United States. If they did they wouldn't be endlessly proposing crap for-profit make-believe tournaments out of whole cloth like Superliga and the Pan Pacific Championship, they'd be focusing on the US Open Cup themselves. I applaud DC United and Payne's recent marketing of the US Open Cup and probably shouldn't get too upset at his comments ("Our honchos make idiotic statements like Platini and Blatter...we're growing up!") but proposing an end to the US Open Cup because you don't like the incentives is venal crap.

As for TheCup.us, it's a great site and well worth checking out.

Is it though? I was under the impression prize money is under $500k or so, not near the sum Kevin Payne mentions (and not coincidentally the same as SuperLiga). Though I'm not sure the information is public anywhere, but it wouldn't make sense for Payne to say that and DC (or any MLS team) not to be trying if there was a huge purse in the Champions League.

CONCACAF cup/Club Championship has a huge purse and DC is still barely trying.
