Thank you for the support for this perspective! I have to say, the piece I wrote is directly informed by my experience playing on Hackney Women FC in London - a lesbian-feminist/proqueer team founded in the 1980s - I played with women of every stripe, saw players embrace each other for who they are (even as we may have had our quibbles with each other about the game). I don't know when I've enjoyed such a sense of collaboration & community If I write with a sense of possibility - imagining something besides the airless space of mainstream sports when it comes to women - it's thanks to Hackney.

This genderqueer-identified, female-bodied (for now) person would like to thank you from the bottom of hir shrivelled little heart for raising these issues. I don't do sports, but similar issues just keep cropping up in all areas of life, and I think it's high time we as a civilization had a good think about what it is we really want from classification systems that put people into discrete little boxes based on what we're increasingly finding to be continuous characteristics.

We don’t discriminate against tall women and say they shouldn’t compete because they’re too tall.
If they have been born and raised as women and they think about themselves as women I would say let them compete as women.
