[...] Would the same thing happen if a high-profile footballer came out? Clifford claims that football is awash with homophobia, the stalling of the FA’s anti-homophobia campaign and the casual terrace chants of “Get up you poof,” and others suggest this is unlikely (see this earlier Pitch Invasion piece on Stonewall’s report on homophobia in football).
Oh, that's certainly true enough, but we're not just talking about your garden-variety-obnoxious chanting here -- though obviously everyone has a different interpretation. I'm not going to repeat the Sol Campbell chants, but it wasn't something many people would defend as having a place at any public gathering.

I completely agree with you that people should be arrested if they commit a crime, i.e. throwing something, physical violence or confrontation. But I was hypothetically disagreeing with the idea that someone should be arrested just for saying something obnoxious.

People should be arrested and charged if they commit a crime, surely. The police tackled those responsible for the abuse hurled at Sol Campbell and that was welcomed by most fans surveyed here.

In terms of the issue in general, there's a pretty clear model to follow thanks to the excellent work tackling racism in football. The FA themselves have taken a lot of positive action in this regard over the last two decades.

A similar public effort to engage the public in shifting the culture surrounding such abuse needs to be made to tackle homophobia. I'm not saying it would be easy or exactly the same path, but it's clear from the survey that no-one -- not fans, players or football insiders -- believes the authorities are doing enough right now.

I'm left wondering what exactly these groups want those in charge to do. Arrest people? I hope not, as that seems a bit on the authoritarian side of draconian. If you're going to crack down on such behavior, do you crack down on profanity in general? I'm just confused as to where this leads or ends.
