I am a firm believer that the MLS is a second rate league due to its complete lack of attention to successful leagues around the world. First off...the MLS has to scrap the Americanized idea of East and West conference. Also, there is no reason why after 30 something games the best team cannot be decided. The playoffs are a joke. if the MLS feels they need playoffs, then it should be a single table format for the regular season, then the top four teams enter a playoff. Standings in this format would ease selections for Super Liga, CONCACAF Champs League. They should also incorporate a domestic cup including clubs from lower levels. That brings up the next issue. Nowhere else can clubs buy their way into a top league. The MLS should rethink their entry methods. Instead of purchasing membership, there should be a promotion/relegation system in place to allow for the table to change each year. It would allow for team rotation and if the cost of losing means loss of funding and relegation, the league will become a significantly more competitive league. We breed incredible talent, but we do not have a league that nurtures and matures that talent. Just look at our World Cup team. Most every member plays in Europe.

I have written many emails to the president of the MLS. I truly think we should petition the MLS to make changes. If you agree....please email me at wlapierr@hotmail.com to set up a petition.

'The complication in the current situation is the inconsistency in one round being home & away, and the other two not being.'

Yeah, that never happens in Europe.

Not in, say, the Carling Cup.

The easiest way for the regular season to matter is to keep the current format, but state that the lower-seeded team doesn't progress unless they actually win the game. Tie goes to the higher seed.

[...] Let me know if you have a better structure. And I mean STRUCTURE, not a tweak of one of the above. I’m not sure how many other basic structures there are. Perhaps group play followed by single game semi-finals and final. [...]

Less playoff teams, have a 4 best teams regardless of conference. Have a 2 game aggregate in the semis that are home-and-home, winners go to the MLS Cup. There's no need for half the league to make the playoffs.
