James McC: UEFA recognise "Red hand salutes" do they? I doubt it very much. .the Red Hand is an ancient symbol of Ulster ( 9counties) and has no religious significance despite desperate attempts by Loyalists to do so.It is also the symbol of the Clan O'Neil, so Martin must have been laughing up his sleeve at the antics of the clowns who were making the gestures. It was a huge mistake to invent this spurious salute and hopefully it has been binned now after all the negative publicity it brought Rangers.

To Damon,

I agree with you on most points but Nazi salutes? even UEFA recognise these "salutes" as red hand salutes. Why can't you?

And to Chris C,

If you have ever get the chance to read his autobiography, you will see that is a load of lies. I mean, why would he still come to watch Rangers games? pathetic

Very good piece. Don`t forget that Fergie was driven from the club as not just a manager, but also a player after they found out he had married a Catholic woman. Shameful.

Try my best to avoid the parochial nonsense that is Celtic and Rangers.. being an Aberdeen fan.

But I will highlight one point you made:

"Sectarianism has far from vanished from the culture of support around the Old Firm despite the campaigns by both clubs."

Yes, you are right there. Strides have been made and not everyone is who follows either of the teams is a 'bad person' or a 'bigot' but the under currents of nonsense, division and 'ultra nationalism' that underpin both club cultures ensures it will not go away. Season after season the both clubs fans indulge in:

-Sectarian chanting (both of them).
-Pro-terrorism songs celebrating death, war, killings and terrorist groups e.g. IRA or UVF
-Rangers fans regularly give nazi salutes at games
-Celtic fans regularly revel in IRA historicalism both inside and outside stadia either through imagery or song.

Mo Johnston singing for Rangers and Celtic changed very little. It set in motion not a cultural shift but merely was another stage in the 'petty, pathetic, tit for tat one upmanship' that also runs through both clubs relations.
