Great article. Amazing the "fort-da" game the US media plays with the history of this sport: Eternally forgetting/remembering that, oh yeah, Americans have played the sport as long as its been around, and, in fact, have at times been really good at it.

It's almost always Argentina, isn't it?

I think South America had the best leagues in the world at the time. It's hard to say because England thought it was below them, but I'm not sure how they would have handle 100,000 plus vs Uraguay or Argentina. On top of the transatlantic boat trip.

Luis Monti, he sounded familiar and I looked him up. I guess he went on to play for Italy? So how long have Italy "borrowed" other countries players (especially Argentina's)? Is that why FIFA has rules about it now? You have to admit, it's a little ridiculous how they have a whole word devoted to it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oriundo#Italian_oriundi

Good article, Tom. Love reading about the '30 World Cup and I'll second your suggestion of reading Wangerin's book. It's a treasure trove of info for any American fan of the game (most of it likely unknown before the read).

what's most socking about the USA performance in 1930, is that before the USA faced (and beat) England, they had been outscored 45-2 in their previous 7 international matches; hows that for an upset?
