[...] Nice to see that the Euros had rebellion against all the corporate hype and rules that mar the game now that money is the most important element. Check this out. [...]

I didn't realize that what I thought was American-type, over the top marketing at a major sporting event had infected European football as well. I liked the observation that the security people seemed more interested in finding 'contraband' product rather than finding weapons or protecting the public. Personally, I think the beverage selection should be expanded to Blue Moon and Grain Belt Premium. Nice article.

We felt the same way about the Olympics here in Atlanta in 1996. Billboards everywhere, severe limits on what we could purchase, where we could purchase it, how we could purchase it, etc. You have to get past a lot of crap just to get to the sporting event you came to see. I don't blame UEFA for wanting to make money. I simply don't care what the official beer is, or soft drink, or whatever. I'll drink what I want to drink and stay away from their "Mass Marketing Zones."

A little bit disturbing, isn't it? This is all part of the same package that allows corporate spectators to watch the games as part of hospitality packages, at the expense of the genuine football fan.

Blame Joao Havelange. When he succeeded Stanley Rous as president of FIFA in 1974, he set in motion the chain of events which has led to the current corporate bonanza.
