Timoteo - I've not discussed the barra brava in much depth this time round because the major story - the death of Emanuel Alvarez - wasn't a barra-related clash. On any other weekend the Boca fight would have merited a deeper consideration of those issues, but with the circumstances of 'Sabrina' (the 17-year-old in Jujuy) and Alvarez's deaths, barras haven't been mentioned in the reports thus far as protagonists, and both Velez and the government have sought to make clear that they don't consider this to be the cause in these incidents (unless, as some confused early reports seemed to suggest, Huracán's barra were for some reason involved in Alvarez's shooting).

Of course, I recognise there's a very deep and complicated relationship, and I've touched on it in articles for other sites and on PI in the past, but in terms of this weekend, I don't think it merits more attention than I've given it, because I don't want to detract attention from two deaths that were no less tragic for NOT being part of the barra brava problem.

What you really don't discuss in this is the close ties that the clubs have with their Barra Brava's and the organized criminal element that is part of the Barra Bravas. These are not fans, as much as organized crime that profits from extortion and kickbacks and bribes in collusion with the clubs. It certainly puts more perspective on the "fan" on "fan" clashes between fans of the same club (like Boca-Boca and River-River clashes).

JaySlick, Velez and Huracán aren't strictly 'rivals' in the sense the phrase is understood in Argentina (which is to say they don't 'share' a clásico with one another). But the use of the word 'accident' appears to suggest, at least, that the act wasn't a case of targetting and killing one person in particular. A bullet was fired in the direction of a loads of Velez fans, and the one it happened to hit was Emanuel Alvarez.

Most likely the reason people wanted to emphasise this lack of 'gang' or organised involvement was that they knew one temptation would be to compare it with Gonzalo Acro's murder by fellow River Plate barras last August, and as Argentine Minister of Justice Aníbal Fernández put it yesterday, they're 'two completely distinct cases'.
