The Premier League would definitely benefit from a more level playing field. It's almost definitely too late for that to happen though, especially as these teams have to compete in the Champions League.

The sad paradox here is that the only way the playing field is going to level is to get more money into the Premier League via super-rich owners so that teams like Man City, Villa and Portsmouth can become more competitive.

They've played in Tripoli, Libya as well (during the period when the Libyan national oil company were sponsoring Juve), and were trying to play a recent one in Shanghai but couldn't get Inter and Roma to agree dates and details. Trying it with the Charity/Community Shield would certainly be a heck of a lot less contentious than the 39th Game nonsense.

Tom's point is a very important one, and one that unfortunately almost always gets lost when the British football media look at the likes of the NFL. Rather than accepting that there are positive and negative elements within the North American system (as there are with virtually everything in life), there tends to be a knee-jerk reaction based on an understanding that is at best caricatured (on the positive side, "ooh, they do that in the States and make loads of dosh, it must be a brilliant idea", on the negative side "ooh, they do that in the States and don't know crap about football, so it must be rubbish").

Serie A held the Italian Super Coppa in Giants Stadium a few years back and no-one said a peep. Maybe they drop the 39th game idea and try the Charity Shield abroad.

I guess CL final soccer weekend in Toronto is just a wishfully dreaming on my part. But in theory without breaking any rules they can take it outside of continental Europe and play final in Israel, so why not Toronto or New York, one can dream :-)

And it's is 10/10 for Blatter, i can't really remember him doing or proposing anything interesting or inovative.

Davyd, first and foremost it must be the national federations, like US Soccer. That's why they should think very carefully before blessing something like game 39, and so far they've responded reasonably. Fifa can also do their bit: obviously, staging the World Cup in the U.S. in 1994 was a big step towards the foundation of a solid national league, for example. What we don't need, of course, are 9/10 of Blatter's ideas to grow the game.

I don't think something like the CL final should be taken out of Europe. It's the European final. But that will be raised, as I strongly suspect we'll see the Superbowl in London within 5-10 years and that'll give everyone even more ideas.

Thank you for posting Tom. One more time the idea of: "You have to grow the sport, You cannot stand still." was mentioned and the fact that EPL is most watched and profitable league makes them responsible for this.

Who is actually responsible for growing the sport? And should UEFA or FIFA consider taking CL final or some other regular season game, usually played in the neutral venue, to the soccer growing counties?
