It is akin to running a company so the management is held accountable for the performance as well as spending of the club. Fair enough.

But letting shareholders vote on team selection is carrying it too far, who wants to be the manager in such a position?

Exactly. There's a huge difference between a model of community ownership with a normal management structure and the myfootballclub model of letting shareholders vote on team selection and transfer policy.

The shareholders elect a board, the board appoints management, management runs the team. If they fail, they are ousted by the board; if things get really bad, the board is ousted by the shareholders.

It has worked for the Green Bay Packers (the epitome of the community-owned club in North America), FC Barcelona and Real Madrid for decades.

Where it breaks down is when the shareholders think that they are buying a ticket to play Championship Manager with real human beings rather than an economic interest in a club.

How can a team function with 47,000 equal shareholders? Too many thoughts and opinions on how a team should be managed, who should be signed, etc.. I would imagine it would be a nightmare, though, perhaps a fun nightmare.

I wonder if we in Toronto or in North America can start a community based club and get it into MLS. TFC is a brainchild of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, an evil money hungry empire that owns Toronto. So all it take now it to get 47,000 local shareholders put money into this project, $1500 each and we can make it work :-)
